Customer order status
How to reduce “Where is my order?” messages for custom products
Why custom Shopify orders generate progress questions, and how to answer them before the customer has to ask.

“Where is my order?” is often not a shipping question. For a custom product, it usually means “Did you get this, and has anyone started?”
If the only public signal is Unfulfilled, people will fill the silence.
Why custom orders attract these messages
Lead times are longer. There may be no tracking number for days. The customer cannot see whether you are waiting on them. Gift dates create anxiety that a stocked SKU does not.
A single status email at purchase is not a progress system. Neither is answering every inquiry from scratch.
What actually reduces the questions
You cannot eliminate them. You can make the common ones unnecessary:
- A lookup page that shows the current production step
- Mail at the steps that change what the customer should do (we need a photo, your proof is ready, it shipped)
- A customer-facing message on the order when the situation is specific (“waiting on the second photo you mentioned”)
- A due date you are willing to stand behind
Silence is more expensive than a short, honest update.
Common mistakes
- Sending a tracking-style email when nothing has shipped
- Using internal status names in customer email
- Asking them to “just reply to this thread” when the thread is not the order
- Updating the team board without updating what the customer can see
Using Orstrax Orderflow
You can enable customer email for a status when the order should tell them it moved. Message Templates hold the subject and body. A Customer Message on the order can appear in those emails and on lookup when you include it.
Proof Review and Request Information send their own mail when those Status Actions run. Collect Info does not send email; the customer adds photos from lookup.
The lookup page is the place they can check without writing you. Pair it with mail at the few steps that matter.
